Overview

The Second Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Diabetes will take place on 24 June 2017 as part of the 16th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIME) in Vienna, Austria.
The primary goal of the AID workshop is to facilitate discussion among different researchers actively engaged in finding Artificial Intelligence-based solutions to problems associated with diabetes.
The complexity of this chronic illness has lead Artificial Intelligence (AI) to become a key technology to provide solutions that empower both patients and caregivers in their everyday life.
Several publicly-funded projects have been carried to support individuals with diabetes, such as: TIDDM, EMPOWER, MOSAIC, MOBIGUIDE, COMMODITY12, DIADVISOR, DIABEO, and the newly-formed, PEPPER project. However, there is still a lot of work to be done. The aim of this workshop is to assimilate lessons learned, and future directions of research, as a first step towards final finding, compatible and complementary tools for people suffering from diabetes.

Call for Papers

We invite submissions in the following categories:

Papers should be formatted according to Springer's LNCS format.
Papers should be submitted to the AID2017 Easy Chair website.
Note that at least one presenter per paper must register for the workshop and therefore to the conference as there are no workshop only fees.

Abstract: Diabetes is a complex disease where healthcare professionals and patients have to work together to achieve a good metabolic control. Patients play an active role in their own care and need to have the knowledge to make decisions adapted to their daily living. In such scenario, AI applications make possible to support patients’ decisions at any scenario of their daily living and additionally they open the door to react at time scales smaller than the programmed face-to-face visits times. In the past decade, the diabetes management paradigm is being transformed by the combination of continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump data. Additionally, current wearable technologies allow to monitor other physiological parameters (i.e. heart rate, sleep quality, physical activity, etc) that have a close relationship with metabolic control. Nowadays, the challenge is to create proactive AI systems, integrated in the healthcare information systems, accessible from patients’ devices and able to collect relevant multi-parametric data from patients in a seamless way. Aspects as user interfaces’ design and user modelling play a crucial role in the success of users’ interaction with AI systems. This talk will discuss the lessons learned in previous experiences and projects and will present new opportunities for AI in diabetes.

Proceedings

Location

The workshop will take place at the Hotel Wilhelminenberg, in the Western part of Vienna, on the edge of the Vienna Woods.
The venue can be accessed by taking the bus #46A or #46B leaving from the end of the line U3, Ottakring. The buses will take you to the hotel station, 'Wilhelminenberg' (the 9th station for #46A or the 10th station for #46B, if the bus stops at all stations).
There are ticket machines in the trams and buses and at the subway stations. Tickets may be bought in advance for 24, 48, 72 hours, and for a week at the tobacco stores, online or at the ticket machines in the subway stations.
The Vienna Public Transportation App might be a useful and informative app to download.
